The thinking behind our pricing
This year marks the fifth edition of GATE. In all previous editions with the sole exception of Spain in 2017 the participation fee was €500 or more. For this edition, we have deliberately set the ticket price below that threshold, fully aware that this means no profit is being generated. This is a conscious and principled choice.
The participation fee covers a wide range of essential costs, including but not limited to:
- Venue rental
- Three meals per day for all participants
- Rental of materials such as conference tents, firewood, sound and music installations
- Event insurance and other operational expenses
In addition, we are organizing a dedicated experience day, during which all transportation costs are fully covered by the organization. This element makes the Belgian edition of GATE truly unique compared to previous editions.
Furthermore, the budget also includes funding for ten scholarships, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent participation.
We are therefore particularly proud to be able to organize a GATE edition once again with a participation fee below €500, something that has not been possible for quite some time.
GATE stands for “Gathering”: coming together to share knowledge and experience. Participants contribute by hosting workshops, while simultaneously gaining access to many others. It is a unique opportunity to learn from peers, expand professional networks, and build long-lasting professional friendships.
We would also like to explicitly acknowledge the significant contributions of UPC, UCLL, and Alba, who are already investing heavily by allocating staff and resources to this project. We are deeply grateful for this support. These contributions are not charged to the event budget, and a substantial part of the work—on our side as well—is done on a voluntary basis, as the available budgets simply do not allow otherwise.
The financial planning clearly reflects that no profit will be made. At the same time, as with any event of this scale, there remains a risk of financial loss. We are doing everything within our means to manage this responsibly and to prevent that outcome.
